Monés Jordi

Jordi Monés is a highly accomplished professional in the field of ophthalmology, renowned for his expertise in retinal diseases. Holding a degree and PhD cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from the Universitat de Barcelona, Spain, he specialized in Ophthalmology at the Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer and completed research and clinical fellowships at prestigious institutions like Harvard University and Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education.

Since 2007, Dr. Monés has been the Director of Institut de la Màcula in Barcelona and the Medical Director of the Barcelona Macula Foundation, dedicated to researching and combating retinal diseases with no current treatment. He is also an Adjunct Professor at John A Moran Eye Center, University of Utah Health, since February 2023.

Dr. Monés is recognized for his significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), focusing on pathophysiology, imaging, biomarkers, clinical trial design, and emerging therapies. Over the past two decades, he has been a Principal Investigator in numerous international multicentre clinical trials and Investigator-driven clinical trials related to AMD, retinal dystrophies, regenerative medicine, stem cells, microbiome, and gene therapy.

His pioneering work includes the intravitreal administration of anti-complement therapy for atrophic AMD, which led to the development of avacincaptad pegol, an FDA-approved drug. Dr. Monés has also played a key role in stem-cell therapy research, including the creation of a mini-pig model for atrophic AMD and contributing to the generation of retinal restoration in clinical trials using RPE stem cells.

As an Adjunct Professor, Dr. Monés is actively involved in gene therapy development for atrophic and intermediate AMD. He serves as a scientific advisor or member of steering committees for various pharmaceutical and biotech companies, contributing to numerous clinical trials. Dr. Monés has published extensively, with over 100 articles in scientific journals and specialist books, and has presented at more than 500 international conferences and meetings.
