João Pereira Figueira, graduated in Medicine at FMUC in 1993 and three years later began his training in Ophthalmology at the Ophthalmology Service of the CHUC, where he remains as a Graduate Hospital Assistant, integrated in the Medical Retina and Vitreo- etinal Surgery Sections.
In 2015 he graduated as PhD in Ophthalmology from the FMUC.
He is a researcher at the AIBILI, ICBR and at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), having participated as principal investigator in more than 90 international multicenter clinicai trials and In research projects in ophthalmology, especially in the area of retinal pathology.
He combines clinical and research practice with university teaching, being Professor of ophthalmology at the FMUC.
He has published more than 120 articles, 28 chapters in specialized journals and 2 books and is a reviewer for several national and international scientific journals in the field of ophthalmology.
He is a member of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology, of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), EURETINA, is a founding partner and actual member of the board of the Retina Studies Group (GER) and was the Coordinator of the Portuguese Retina and Vitreous Group of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology in the biennium 2015 -16.
